Monthly missionary planners

Something fun that I think might be exciting is every six weeks I get a new planner and a lot of people decorate them but I don't really have time and stuff to do that. But if each six weeks someone new decorated a planner for me and sent it to me I think that would be way fun. I can't have pictures of people (like boys or family that's kinda distracting) on them but just decorate it with pictures or Christ or quotes or to look like a missionary or just to look cute anything really. let me know if that is something you guys would like to do! this transfer is already 2 weeks in so the next one would have to be done and sent out quickly but other than that 6 weeks is plenty of time!

(Christy): I asked her how that would work, if she would send planners home or if we could send her stickers and stuff to decorate.

I will send some blank ones to you! Tell Morgan he HAS to do one!!! if he just draws a picture of a truck and puts it on the front of the book I would love that so much!!! I am SOOOO excited!!! :D

Letter dated July 22, 2013 to mom

(Christy) I ask her a lot of questions still trying to figure out what is going on in her life now. So this letter answers some of the questions.

I love all your questions. I feel like i know what to write that way! I definitely use my bike. We bike almost every day. Thank you for feeding the missionaries. You are great! Now, just find people for them to teach! I am an hour away from the Mall of America. Definitely we would both be distracted if you came to Minnesota. (Christy: Mona Farnsworth keeps trying to talk me into a road trip to the mall)

I really do love Minnesota. We are teaching Brother Norman who is an excommunicated member who is so ready to be re-baptized it is crazy. He loves the gospel, and he is more active and dedicated than most of the members of the branch. We are also teaching Tyler Engel. He is an 11 year old boy who is a lot like Morgan, but more angry and upset, but he likes cars and the same music as Morg.We are also teaching Brother Penkaty. He knows the gospel is true, but he doesn't want to change. He reads regularly and he just likes to be rebellious but I love them all so much. They are funny and so loving. I am excited and hopeful that they will have a desire to change and be happier in their lives.

I have yet to receive a letter from you mom. I don't know what's going on with them.

I love you very much. xoxoxoxoxoxox Sister Smith

Letter received July 25, 2013

I was recently asked a question, "What scripture passages are especially meaningful to you and why? As i pondered i love Isiah 26:4, John 14:18, D&C 121:7-9, but mostly the Book of Enos. Verse 8 references to Matt 9:22. Just like Elder Holland said in conference sometimes the best thing you can do is BELIEVE!. Believe in the teachings, ask questions and little by little you will know. Our faith an make us whole if we push through the hard times and continue to have faith in our Lord. We may not know how Jesus can forgive us, how he can sweep away our guilt, but remember that all things can be healed through the Atonement. Remember: "Go to, thy faith hath made thee whole." (vs 8) "And I (Emily) knew it would be according to the covenant which (S)he had made wherefore my soul did rest" (vs17) God loves his children. He will forgive us and make us whole as we ask for forgiveness. I encourage you each to ponder and share what passages of scripture are most important to you and why. Testimonies are strengthened as testimonies are shared. President Monson said in conference "Young (Wo)men, I hope you appreciate the sacrifices which your parents so willingly make in order for you to serve. Their labors will sustain you, their faith encourage you, their prayers uphold you. A mission is a family affair. Though the expanse of continents or oceans may separate, hearts are as one. I am so grateful for the family support system I have. I love you and pray for your safety and blessings daily. You are the best family a sister could ask for! xoxoxoxoxoxoxox

July 22 emails

I paid but they are going to reimburse me for the luggage. I don't use my personal debit card a lot cause they give me 150 for each month for food and living supplies but I am glad you are taking care of my card. I am glad to know I have money if I need it. I think the monthly 400 covers my rent and the 150 referenced earlier and things of that nature. I love answering your questions so don't feel bad about asking them :) I do have an address in Waseca and I have been wondering why it is taking so long to hear from you. I have not got a letter from you once yet. just packages. I will give you my Waseca address but don't give it out to people cause I don't want to have to change my address every time I get transferred. But I am at the library and I don't have it here so I will send it in the letter. I am happy this is definitely hard and I definitely wish the members would have us over more and find people for us to teach but this way I am learning how to do the hardest part of serving first. I had been homesick but It is gone now. I still love you and miss you lots but I love Waseca too and I love the members that I do know that have us over and help us teach and stuff. We mostly teach part-mamber families so it is easy for those to help us teach their nonmember family members. haha! I am Happy here and I love it. I got a blessing from President Clements and he told me that my homesickness will soon subside and the hole left from my family's absence will be filled to overflowing with the love for the people I serve and my companion. So I know that eventually people will let us in their homes and I will love them more than I already do! I love you so much mommy.

With Love, Sister Emily Smith

I was just looking over your banking account and was wondering about the $60 delta charge. Did you have to pay for your suitcases? Also I transferred $300 into your account. I don't really know what a good amount is or even how the money works for you. I just want you to have what you need. I guess you could transfer it yourself, but it's done. So we pay the monthly $400, does that cover your rent or what? I know I always have so many questions, but it takes a week to get the answers so I have to ask them when I think about them. I also wonder if you have an address in Waseca or if all the mail goes thru the mission office. It seems to be taking forever to hear from you. haha. I just hope you are getting my mail quickly. I got some nice pictures from President Clements of you and your companion. You look so good and happy. Are you? Grandma and Jamie tell me you are (or have been) quite homesick. I pray that things are getting better for you. You should be seeing a letter from me soon. I sent it out today. Well we are headed to Bear Lake sometime tonight or tomorrow (you know your dad) so i guess i better go pack. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo. Love, Mom

July 11, 2013

Dear Brother & Sister Smith,

On Wednesday afternoon, my wife, Julie, and I, greeted Sister Emily Elizabeth Smith at the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport and welcomed her to this great mission.  She was happy and excited to begin her mission.  Thank you for all of your efforts to prepare her for the adventure that lies ahead.  We understand what a great sacrifice you are making to support your daughter.

We drove from the airport to the mission home and took pictures of our new group of elders and sisters.  The day was sunny and beautiful.  We then had lunch and provided a mission orientation.  I also interviewed each missionary.  The Assistants provided training in finding new investigators.

At about 6:30 pm, Sister Clements and I introduced them to their trainers, who greeted them with big smiles and bear hugs.  After loading bikes and luggage onto various vehicles, they departed for their assigned areas.  Sister Smith has an outstanding trainer whom I carefully and prayerfully selected.  In two weeks, they will return to Bloomington for a day of additional instruction.

Your daughter joins a remarkable corps of accomplished and dedicated missionaries.  There is a great tradition of obedience and accomplishment in this mission.  She will serve with missionaries who desire to build the kingdom and who are willing to sacrifice their all for the cause.  We serve in a beautiful part of the Lord’s vineyard where mighty rivers and beautiful lakes are plentiful.  We are privileged to serve among faithful saints.  The work is blessed and prospered by their faith and commitment.

Please encourage your daughter to obey all mission rules.  She will become stronger, more mature, and
more self-disciplined as she faithfully follows the rules.  Her first area of service is Waseca,
Minnesota; her companion is Sister Claire Elizabeth Fink.  Enclosed are some photos, which I hope
you will enjoy.

If you need to contact the mission office, the number is 952-835-7788.
Regards

Letter to mission president

I was asked by President and Sister Clements to write a letter about Emily, so they could kind of know somethings about her and when she arrives in Minnesota.

I am so excited for you to meet Emily. She will be a great asset to the mission. I have always told Emily she would make a great missionary. She has a strong testimony, as you will see.

Emily loves to have fun and be silly and laugh. She has three sisters and one brother. Her two older sisters are married. She has one nephew and one more niece or nephew on the way entering the family in August.

Emily and I have had a lot of fun cooking together. She is a great cook. At college she cooks for her friends, they provide the groceries and she cooks for them all. She also loves music. She has a great voice and loves to sing. She also plays the piano, nothing too extreme, but she can play a lot of the Hymns. She enjoys reading books.

Emily’s grandparents are on a mission in Idaho Falls at the church farm. They go every April and stay until the crops are all in and potatoes delivered usually until October. This will be their third year serving there. Emily is very close to her grandparents. They love to watch old movies like Singing in the Rain and eat popcorn. It is a great Sunday tradition.

Emily’s dad has had his own business for the last 23 years. She has had to do a lot of different work for him. He is a Mac Tools Distributor. I get to do the office work for him, so I get to be home with the kids. It takes the whole family to get the work done. Emily is a good hard worker. She isn’t afraid to get dirty. We like to camp and ride four wheelers as a family.

I hope this will answer some of your questions about Emily and pray that you will be able to find a great trainer for her. I am going to miss her like crazy, but I am very happy she will be serving the Lord.

My email is toolmama7@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

Christy Smith

Letter home to Jamie

I am homesick today but the amount of homesickness changes by the hour. Some second I am not homesick at all but today was my first real crying session but my companion was there for me and she helped me out of it! I love that everyone prays for the missionaries. Missionaries are the 2nd most prayed for group in the whole church! It must help, and we need all the help that God is willing to send us!

My mom is like THE best person to hang out with! she's the coolest. Scrapbooking is fun too sounds like your weekend was great! Family History is really exciting and it is part of missionary work It needs done! you go ahead and get hooked on Family history work, it is a good thing to be hooked on!

You will do great in your new calling. Don't worry I am petrified about my calling to serve a mission but the Lord provides a way. I definitely don't know enough to be a missionary but here I sit with my name tag on my chest in Waseca, Minnesota. Thanks for the e-mail I love hearing from home!

She hides this homesickness from me. Cassidy and I don't get this in our emails and letters. Wonder if she doesn't want me to worry?

President and Sister Clements

Just want to reach right through the picture and give her a big hug. She looks great!

Week three

YAY that is so cool! You really are so needed in this calling because you are so passionate about it! Everything sounds like it is going great!

I have only had one headache since I left home and it was my first or second day in Minnesota just cause I am not patient with myself, I just want to be teaching investigators NOW i don't want the door slammed in my face all day! there are not very many members and I know they have friends that are not LDS, hello! let us teach them! but I also just want to be all those things that I was promised in my setting- apart blessing NOW, not later when i have experience I just want to be a great missionary now. So many people are just set in their ways which is hard but I think we met an investigator last night, I felt really good about him, even though he was drunk I feel like he is ready to hear the gospel and let it bless his life and his Children's lives. I think it is allowed I don't know why it wouldn't be! (to send pictures i mean) anyway I love you so much write me letters so I can hear from you during the week too! also if you could send me my little Hymnal it should be in my room with my big scriptures not my seminary ones but the ones i got at my baptism, and insurance card to put in my wallet and one of my roommates in the MTC had a book that was really cool and I want one but I can't get one here so if you or susie or someone in the city could go get one and send this to me I would love it!! Also my luggage ripped so IDK what to do about that Idk if it can be fixed but it is the big suitcase I was so sad. I just want to have nice luggage! It looks like it could be fixable but i just need to find someone who would know how. Also if you could send me a think that plugs into USB and a camera card i could e-mail you pictures instead of printing everything that I want you to see:)

This is my letter to her.

I am so happy to report on the work at the family history center tonight. So i switched with Jill so i could go to the circus tomorrow with the kids. I kept the people she works with, one of who is Carol Mckee. She works down at Al's . I was a little worried, because i know she likes to work with Jill. When she came in tonight, she kind of paused and said no Jill? I told her we had switched and she said OH Boy. I thought Oh No!! I had got there a little early and said my own little prayer for help tonight. I also kept thinking about you telling me i was needed in this calling. I also thought on the way home from Altamont, where can i start with patrons and what can i do to get them excited. Guess what came to mind??? THE FAN!! Show them all their fan. I remember how many people were excited to see that. So Jamie came up for the first time ever and we got her a fan. Jennifer also came up (at 7:40) so i could help her fill in all the blanks on her fan. You remember no grandma Dixie, and fix John and Lois, delete my dad with his unknown mother blah blah blah. Then i also got to help Carol. I told her about the fhc portals and showed her all the links there. She found some pictures of her ancestors on ancestry.com, I showed her how to upload them to her family. She was giggling and so excited. Then she did three more by herself. It was so cool. It made me feel good about myself and abilities, unlike last week. Also someone changed John Stobo's birthday back to where it belongs. I was so happy to see that. I wish i could email her and tell her thank you. There wasn't any contact email information, just her name. Now i have to solve the problem of a child that was born in the 1500's to them. They were born in 1653 ish. Jennifer and Rick are getting really excited about family history work. Jenn just couldn't figure out why she had all those blanks. She said she couldn't sleep Sunday afternoon she just kept thinking about how she needed to find her ancestors and link them to her.

So how are the headaches are you having any with all the stresses of the MTC? now being out in the field? Lindsey tried to send you some pictures thru this account. Do you know if that is allowed? Her email wouldn't go with any attachments. Well I need to go to bed so i will be wide awake when you call. Love you and miss you. Remember, you are never alone. Two companions all the time. I am so thankful Heavenly Father is keeping you safe and helping you not be afraid. Love you lots!!!!!! Mom

When did you know the church was true

So that is what i call the aha moment. Emily asked me and her dad to write and tell her when or how we knew the church was true. Hopefully we all have a time or experience when we came to know for ourselves that the church was true. Maybe not as grand of an experience as Joseph Smith, but somehow we have to know for ourselves that the church is true. If you feel like you want to share that experience with Emily, she would love to hear your stories.

The aha moment

I am going to try to summarize Emily's last letter home. She has been questioning her choice to go on a mission. She was wondering if she ever got a real answer from Heavenly Father and the MTC was not very fun. She had a little meltdown on the 4th of July and didn't want to be there anymore. Then on Friday sitting in class her teacher asked them to share spiritual things that had happened that day. She instantly thought, "I haven't had and spiritual things today, I am a missionary and if I have not had any spiritual experiences then I kinda suck." Then she was reminded several times from her emails and letters from home that she is not alone. Grandma Helen gave her some great advice: She will always have two companions on her mission. Her sister companion and her Heavenly Father. Two scriptures D&C 121:7-8 and John 14:18 also brought great comfort. She also remembered her blessing from being set apart. President Jason Young toward the end of her blessing told her she would never be alone. While she was contemplating all these things the Holy Ghost kind of took over her heart and she thought it might explode. In class on Saturday they were talking about the different ways we can feel the spirit. D&C 128:1 helped her to understand that the Holy Ghost can speak just by having things occupy our minds. The whole time she was deciding whether to serve or not, she was thinking about it all the time and that was the Holy Ghost telling her yes.
One really cool thing her branch president told her was that from the time she was baptized until the time she entered the MTC however strong her testimony was, it would double in the two weeks she was in the MTC. She believes him.
She extended an invitation to pray for charity. Said it would be a good experience. She is quite worried about her grandma Dixie and not being with her in heaven. More good scriptures can be found on a chart on pages 96 and 97 of Preach my Gospel. The section is about how the Holy Ghost communicates to us.
Emily is growing so much already. I remember my friends who had missionaries go out tell me about when they would write home and encourage them to read the scriptures more, pray more, etc. Now I am getting the encouragement from my missionary. I love it!

Mission email

So Emily's email address for her mission is smith.emily@myldsmail.net. Don't use dear elder anymore, all they do is print it and put it in the mail. You better not be too lazy to put a letter in an envelope yourself if you are going to write to her. Email works great. I expect to hear from her again on monday. She did make it there fine and we did get to talk to her for 42 minutes this morning on the phone from the Salt Lake airport. It was just like Christmas. I couldn't even sleep last night. I received a great letter from her today and will post it later. She is doing great and very ready to leave the MTC. It was very intense and a lot of sitting in classes. Love you all. Christy

First letter home

Hey, Friday is my P-Day! Yesterday and today have been so great! I love my branch president, he is super cool! we spend a lot of time in class so the days seem long but they go by fast. if that makes sense! I am already learning a lot! I miss you all. Everytime I think about it I start to cry, but I am praying for your safety each time I pray, which is kind of A LOT!! Please be so careful while I am gone I love you too much to focus on things here if you guys are injured! Dad, PLEASE be a safe driver, stay awake! I love you and couldn't stand anything to happen to you while I am not there to be with you. I am grateful to be here learning and serving.

I got a package from Susie which was really really nice! I already sent a letter home so I hope to hear from you soon! Mom, could you send me my razor, I left it in the shower in my bathroom. also if you could send pictures of our family, and our house, and Duchesne, etc. Mostly family just to have if you can find a nice photo book thing that is small and easy to carry around that would be great if not that is fine as well. :) That would be great! I am actually really homesick right now but my branch president talked to me last night and he said it usually goes away by Sunday, which I hope so, cause I hate crying all the time when I pray or read letters, or think about home. But when he was talking to my branch it was really cool cause he started talking about how we are Angels, and I was thinking NO WAY! that is exactly what President Young told me! Anyway it was really cool!

Mom how are you doing? I miss you a lot and I am so glad that I got to spend the time with you that I did! I miss doing Family History work tell me all about your awesome adventures with that! Have Cassidy, Morgan, Jennifer, Lindsey, Mel, and Jamie e-mail me or write a letter! I feel so excluded from everyone! I was so used to being home all the time with everyone, now I am with my companion all the time it is weird! But she (my companion) is cool!

We have 30 minutes to be on the computer to e-mail but I didn't have any e-mails and the only e-mail I know off the top of my head is yours so I guess you get all the e-mails and since yours is the only address I know off the top of my head you will be the only one getting letters from me until someone writes me first!

I basically feel like I did the first couple days in Logan but this is a little better because I am basically busy all day long so I don't have as much time to feel scared. and I have friends here already. My roomates are really cool and so are the sisters next door. One of them is just as homesick as I am so we have each other! and The Elders in my district are cool, they are going to Tampa Florida, So I guess we will be parting there but in our branch and our zone everyone is going to Minnesota, Minneapolis except the three sets of Elders that are in my district.

Yesterday I ran 1/2 a mile, then did some weight lifting so I am pretty sore, and my feet have at least 3 blisters each but that's okay cause we spend a lot of time sitting so hopefully my feet will touhgen up and get calloused so I can be ready to go by the time the MTC is over. But the food is really good and there are at least 4 choices for every meal then there is fruits and veggies and desserts so I have to watch myself carefully. I am gonna try to e-mail Cass real fast so have her check her e-mail if she doesn't have one tell her to write me so i can have her e-mail. and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE write me letters as soon as possible, I miss you and can't wait to hear from you! LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

notes from Emily

Emily sent home a great letter and told me she had to be an investigator in their role play at the mtc, she had to pray to know if the restoration was true. The Spirit came over her really strong and from that point on, she has never been homesick. She remembers praying to know if the Book of Mormon was true and receiving a witness that is was. Tender mercies from a loving Heavenly Father!

Write letters

So Emily is doing great, but she needs your email addresses or physical addresses to mail you letters. If you have emailed her then she will have it. Thanks it really helps to hear from her family. Keep up the good work. Christy

Letter from Emily

I sent you a letter but I leave at 8:30 am and yes I can call home but IDK your cell number. . . and so I am planning on calling you to make sure you answer, then hanging up and using my phne card to call so I can get more minutes out of my phone card!.

Did the FHC people just give you the wrong key or what??? COOL! I hope Cassidy learns to enjoy Family History it really is super cool! What did you teach the 4th ward boys?

YOU MADE IT THROUGH 4TH OF JULY WITH NO NAP?!?!?!?!? you crazy! wow! 4th of July was pretty cool here, but not as cool as home! but we got to watch a movie (17 miracles) and have a nice devotional then watch fireworks. as a result of the holiday our bedtime was extended and we didn't even have to be back to our residences until 10:45 which normally we have to be back by 9:30. and then the next day was p-day and that is when we do our service at 6:00 am! so I didn't get much sleep last night but I sent some letters, did my laundry, I ended up with a pair of your garmets so I will have to send them your way so I don't wear them thinking they are mine! haha!

I am LOVING all the letters I think I get the most letters out of anyone in my district which makes me feel pretty cool! I am trying to write back fast but I don't have a lot of free time, so explain that to anyone who asks but I do Love the letters and I still want to get them!

:D I love you! Talk to you on Wednesday!
